Day in the Life…Updated

Your trusted source for nutrition, wellness, and mindset for thriving health.

A bit of time has gone by since my last day in the life blog. While some things have stayed the same, a lot has changed! Routine is so important to me and I try to build my days around the things that are most important to me. While some days it feels nearly impossible to get everything done, creating a healthy routine and organizing the day makes it possible to stay sane!  It has become a pattern for taking care of myself (and getting stuff done!).

While some days might look a bit different based on deadlines or that day’s activities, here is a peak into what my typical routine looks like.

Wake Up

I wake up most mornings at 5:30am without the need for an alarm clock! Over the past few months I’ve been needing adjustments with my thyroid medication. One of many symptoms I experienced was tiredness, so I knew something was off. Since this medication has been adjusted, I have been feeling better and am happy to report I once again wake up feeling refreshed and ready to start my day!

After I get out of bed, I brush my teeth, wash my face, and put on eye cream and moisturizer. Next, I meditate for about 10 minutes using the device Muse. I really enjoy this quiet time with myself. I have even convinced my husband to start a meditation practice, which he enjoys too! It’s a great way to center yourself, and I have truly seen a difference in my stress levels since incorporating meditation into my daily routine.

Now it’s time for data. To know me is to know that I am a bit of a science geek and I love all the numbers. I find they give me a good snapshot  of how I’m currently doing and perspective of changes  over time. I started using a Lumen (use code: cynthia30 for $30 off) a number of months ago and I love it! It gives me a number indicating how metabolically flexible I am. With the simplicity of only 1-2 breaths, this handheld device gives me a macro recommendation breakdown for the day: varying suggested carb intake each day between low, moderate, and high.

Next it’s time for my CGM readings. I’ve been using the app Nutrisense (Use code: cynthiathurlow for $25 off monthly plans) and have to admit I’ve been pretty impressed with this product. I am finding myself constantly checking my readings, and it’s been pretty eye opening to see what foods impact my sugar level!.

Finally, I will weigh myself and take my thyroid medication. Weighing myself isn’t a normal daily occurrence for me (nor do I recommend weighing yourself daily), but I do it to understand how my adjusted thyroid medication is affecting my body.  I’m happy to report that I am back on track with my weight (thank you, happy thyroid)!

Get Moving

I’ll get dressed and venture to the kitchen to make a cup of green tea for myself and my husband. We both enjoy Pique green tea (Code: CYNTHIAT for 5% off). I’ll set out our supplements for the day. Then I’ll drink my first glass of electrolytes (I enjoy throughout the day). Whenever I am drinking water, it is diluted with electrolytes. While fasted, I use my Dynamic Electrolytes or LMNTs raw unflavored electrolytes.

I prioritize moving my body every single day. I try to switch things up, as it’s important to incorporate both higher intensity and active recovery exercises into your routine. I alternate between high intensity interval training (HIIT) and bodyweight exercises if working out at home, or lifting weights at the gym. I do a 3 day split focused on posterior chain work …(I’m working on my butt)!

After my workout, it’s time for the doodles exercise. I try to take them on a 2-3 mile walk outside. During this walk I don’t wear sunglasses because I want to absorb as much natural light as possible first thing in the morning. If I walk by myself, I’ll usually listen to a podcast (I have so many favorites) or a book on Audible. Once home, it’s time to ensure my boys are awake and ready for school (virtual these days). Then I shower, get dressed, and am now ready to start my work.

That Work Hustle

I don’t schedule any work before 11:00am, when I begin seeing clients or recording my podcast. Before that time, I am usually organizing my day. As an entrepreneur, it’s a constant balance of meetings, podcast work, 1:1 work, team meetings, and group work.

I normally break my fast around 11:00am with a small meal. Lately, I’ve been enjoying my chocolate Simply Clean bone broth protein powder with some nut butter or MCT oil. I will eat a more substantive meal around 1:00pm. My favorite go to lunch is bacon and eggs tossed with vegetables or arugula with olives, EVOO or avocado oil, and Redmonds salt (code: CYNTHIA for 15% off). My second go to dish is this egg roll in a bowl recipe. Once I break my fast, I switch over to the flavored electrolytes from LMNT. My favorite is their orange salt.

In the afternoon, I try to clean up the house, do laundry, and prep for dinner. I usually stop working before 5:00pm and take the dogs for a second long walk. I find it an incredibly peaceful way to wind down and we all look forward to this time outside with nature. Don’t worry, my sons walk my dogs at 12:00pm and 4:00pm, so they get tons of exercise!

Winding Down

My biggest meal of the day is at lunch, so dinner tends to be mostly protein and non starchy vegetables. As soon as the sun goes down, I put on my blue blockers. I aim to read before bed (yes, an actual book) and be in bed by 9:00pm. Most nights this works, but I am also supervising my boys with their homework and activities.

My bedtime routine is: wash face, apply Vitamin C and hyaluronic acid along with a night cream and eye cream, brush and floss teeth, and use a hydrating hand cream. I usually sleep in long flannel loose pj bottoms with a cotton top in the winter. I sleep on a silk pillowcase and an Envy Pillow….both help keep me face off of my pillow and ease tension on my hair (admittedly, I try to avoid washing my hair more than 2x/week; esp in winter).

There you have it, a typical day in the life of Cynthia Thurlow! I hope his glimpse into my life helps you see how I can incorporate routine and healthy living into my day to day. I try to be as consistent as possible, but also allow grace on days when things don’t go as planned.
