I speak, write and teach about hormones and hormone imbalances literally everyday. But let us start at the very beginning. First identifying if you have a hormone imbalance and if your hormones need more support.
Newsflash: in our hectic paced lives, if you are north of 35 your hormones probably need more support. But I digress. Here are the….
Top 6 Signs Your Hormones Are Off
1.Weight Gain
Let’s clarify. Unexplained weight gain, especially around the midsection, is a tell-tale sign that you have a hormone imbalance. If you believe that you are eating, sleeping and exercising well and are still gaining weight, hormones could be the culprit.
2. No Energy
Do you wake up, start your day, and two hours later feel tired to the point that you could go back to sleep? Do you hit a proverbial wall in the afternoon and require caffeine to keep going? Do you find that you are somehow energized in the late evening hours when you should be winding down to go to sleep? If you are answering ‘yes’ to these questions there is probably something deeper at play. Some of my clients experience these symptoms because they have a cortisol dysregulation and other clients are experiencing major hormone shifts.
3. Poor Sleep
Do you have a hard time falling asleep, staying asleep or prioritizing sleep? If so then you probably have a hormone imbalance that is impacting your quality of sleep. When I first start talking with clients they are often desperate to try anything! I read commentary on my blog and social media channels from people who are willing to go to extremes to feel better. HOWEVER, they are over-looking a key component and that is SLEEP. One of the foundations to long term wellness is sleep and the lack of sleep is very indicative of a deeper issue.
4. Severe PMS Symptoms and/or Heavy Periods
Do you experience extreme mood swings, anxiety, or depression? Are you irritable and hungrier than usual? Have your PMS symptoms gotten worse with age? During your period do you struggle to find products to contain your heavy flow? Is being on your period holding you back from your daily activities? If you are nodding your head “yes” to these questions you have a hormone imbalance. Our monthly cycles do not need to be painful or so disruptful to our lives.
5. Anxiety and/or Depression
When I do in-depth calls with my 1:1 clients, they often express to me that they have been suffering from anxiety or anxious feelings that feel foreign to them. They iterate that these feelings are not their norm but they don’t know how to fix it. Some are in a depressed state from hormone imbalances or just plain old, feeling poorly for so long. if you can relate to this, please know it is not your fault. When our hormones shift they can have a direct impact on our mental state.
6. No or Low Libido
A healthy sex drive is a sign of a healthy body. If you just don’t ever feel like doing it, you probably have something deeper going on. You aren’t broken and a healthy sex life isn’t just reserved for the young. Often times a little hormone support and the right supplements can help women in peri-menopuase and beyond reclaim a healthy libido.
