My New Normal

Your trusted source for nutrition, wellness, and mindset for thriving health.

I get a lot of questions regarding my day, my routine and how I manage things with our stay-at-home orders and social distancing practices. It is a juggle to manage all the working parts. Two adults working from home, two active teen and tween boys at home and two dogs. We are doing our best to maintain some normalcy.

My New Normal

I slept in and didn’t get up until after 7am. This isn’t necessarily my normal, but with no early morning practices for my boys, no early morning gym sessions for me, and the ability to just allow my body to do it’s own circadian rhythm, the sleep is welcome. Something for all of us to keep in mind, prioritizing sleep is the simplest way to boost our immunity.

Due to our stay home orders, I did my workout from home as I have been doing for the last 3 weeks or so. I grabbed my workout clothes in the dark of my bedroom, headed to my basement and did a workout. My outfit doesn’t actually match… but these are the perks of not having to see anyone in public. Silver lining!

I sure miss my heavy lifting at the gym and SolidCore workouts. I try to keep my thoughts positive and happy knowing I will be back one day.

My workout consisted of a Tabata routine. Here’s what I did:

  • X Jumps
  • Plié Squat Jumps
  • Mountain Climbers
  • Tuck Jumps
  • Forearm Push Ups

Every day I also take my prescriptions and supplements. I always take my thyroid medication at the start of each day. I organize all my supplements a week ahead so that I stay organized.

I like to add this lemon balm in my water after breaking my fast. It supports immunity and is an adaptogenic herb. That means it support’s my body naturally and reduces stress.

Mid morning I started slow-cooking a whole chicken to use with tortilla soup I am making tonight. The tortilla soup is a house favorite.

On this particular work day, I am recording there podcast episodes. One episode is for Everyday Wellness, my podcast, and two of the episodes I get to be the guest. This requires lots of talking and lots of thinking!

Breaking my fast:

I broke my fast with deviled eggs, bacon, a few Siete tortillas (made mostly of chickpea/garbanzo beans) pickled onions and sauerkraut.

You might be wondering why these foods?

I eat a diet low in oxalates which is kinder on my digestive track. I also highly encourage the consumption of fermented foods. They are delicious and really beneficial for our gut microbiome. Having a healthy gut positively impacts our immune function.

Daily activity:

One of my favorite parts of social distancing is taking my labradoodle, Cooper, for a 3-4 mile walk in our neighborhood. I love it and so does he… just look at that smile!

We got to watch the sunset over the golf course during our walk.

Family dinner was Chicken Tortilla Soup. This is easy for me to throw together and hearty enough for my growing boys to fill up on!

After dinner we enjoyed the board game “Clue” which is my youngest son’s favorite.

I also tried on more clothing options…. I am looking for the perfect pair of navy pants. Short girl problems abound! As a speaker and spokesperson, I try to cultivate a wardrobe so I can be ready whenever they need me. I know that right now we aren’t going to gatherings or even to public spaces, but I have every faith that things will go back to “normal” and I will resume sharing the power of nutrition and intermittent fasting again soon.

Something I love about wearing a tracker… reaching my activity goals for the day. I’m happy that on this particular day, staying home, going for a walk with Cooper, I managed to get in over six miles of walking. Movement is so essential to our everyday wellness.

We wrapped up our day by enjoying a little screen time… particularly “Little Fires Everywhere” I’m streaming on Hulu.

How are you staying busy during quarantine? Has COVID-19 changed your daily schedule? How are you feeling?

We can all get through this together with grace and community.
