My Favorite Books of 2020

As we move out of the year that was 2020, I like to reflect on some of my favorite books that have helped me through such an unprecedented year. Reading can be such a therapeutic way to not only take care of yourself, but learn something along the way.

“The Fatburn Fix: Boost Energy, End Hunger, and Lose Weight by Using Body Fat for Fuel” by Dr. Cate Shanahan

This book solidified why I eat the way that I do. Dr. Shanahan dives into how the “Hateful 8”  oils/PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) lead to inflammation, carbohydrate addiction and insulin resistance. The book also shows the value of ketones, fasting and why eating a nutrient dense diet will help us repair our fat-burning capabilities.  Take a listen to Dr. Cate on the Everyday Wellness podcast here.

“Why We Get Sick: The Hidden Epidemic at the Root of Most Chronic Disease―and How to Fight It” by Dr. Ben Bickman

In Dr. Bickman’s book, he shows how insulin resistance is at the base of every chronic disease. He also shows us the strategies on how we can reverse this, which includes adjusting macros and intermittent fasting.

We also had Dr. Bickman on the Everyday Wellness podcast chatting about why obesity matters – listen in here!

“Sacred Cow: The Case for (Better) Meat” by Robb Wolf & Diana Rodgers

This book was an excellent, well thought out book on the ethical considerations on eating meat. The book debunks myths, supports regeneration of our soils and supports healthier environments for grazing animals. As you know, we are all interconnected – humans, animals, the soil and planet.

Plus, if you’d like to listen to my podcast episode with Robb Wolf about the Paleolithic way, you can listen in here!

“The Cancer Code: A Revolutionary New Understanding of a Medical Mystery” by Dr. Jason Fung

The Cancer Code takes us into Dr. Fung’s new, radical way he’s understanding cancer. In an excerpt from The Cancer Code’s, “Dr. Fung provides a new paradigm for dealing with cancer, with recommendations for what we can do to create a hostile soil for this dangerous seed.” He believes one of those strategies is intermittent fasting and eliminating insulin-stimulating foods (like sugar and refined carbs!)

I also did a podcast with Dr. Fung all about diabetes, insulin resistance and kidney disease that you can listen to here!

“The Immunity Fix” by Siim Ladd & Dr James Dinicolantonio

What a year 2020 has been! In the midst of a modern pandemic, finding strategies to keep yourself health and support immunity are really aligned with my methodology. In this book, they discuss avoiding processed foods, eating less often and the importance of exercise, sweat, and meditation.

We had Siim on the podcast back on Episode 73, discussing biohacking and human body optimization. Listen to that here.

“The Power of When” by Michael Breus

Loved this book by Michael Breus! The Power of When shows us how to discover and support your chrono-biology/chronotype. From this, we can change the way we live our lives, exercise, work and thrive. My chronotype is a Lion – what is yours?

“90 Seconds to a Life You Love” by Dr. Joan Rosenberg

This is one of those books that sat in my Audible library until I was ready to “do the work” I’m so glad I finally got around to reading it! 90 Seconds to a Life You Love has brought me back to my childhood. It helped me work through micro-traumas and uncomfortable feelings I was subjugating. The work is simple when you are ready to invest in your mental and emotional health – leaning into my feelings has been freeing and affirming.

Plus, listening to it on Audible was an extra bonus because Dr. Rosenberg’s voice was so soothing and reasonable.

“The Wim Hof Method: Activate Your Full Human Potential” by Wim Hof

I recently had Wim Hof on my podcast (linked here!) discussing his method of cold therapy, meditation and breathing techniques.

Wim Hof encourages us to know that you CAN do the impossible. According to him, “We alter the collective consciousness by awakening to our own boundless potential. We are limited only by the depth of our imagination and the strength of our conviction.” He teaches us how to do just that in his book, pushing us to fulfil our highest potential.

“Untamed” by Glennon Doyle

Last, but certainly not least, I have to mention Glennon Doyle’s popular and life-changing book, Untamed. This book shook me to my core. She shares her own, deeply personal experiences to help us to show up, live big, be authentic and live your truth. I found this book so liberating…on every level. Bravo, Glennon!

What a list! If you’ve read any of these books, I’d love to hear what you thought of them!

Share this post with anyone you know looking for a good book to add to their list. And let me know in the comments below – what’s one book you couldn’t put down in 2020? I’d love some new reading material for 2021!
